CLOUD VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
FAQs
What is cloud video surveillance?
Cloud video surveillance is when your security footage is uploaded to a remote server via the internet, rather than stored on a local device – such as an NVR, DVR or NAS drive.
With cloud video surveillance your security videos are stored in the cloud, which removes the need for local storage. This reduces the risk of your footage being deleted or tampered with and means it’s easier to scale – because you can increase and decrease the storage capacity as you choose.
By shifting some or all of your video surveillance to the cloud, you can benefit from increased accessibility and scalability, whilst reducing the risk of your video footage being lost or tampered with.
Above all, the live video from a customer site is constantly being watched from a remote command centre. This enables the site protected from theft, vandalism, accidents etc, before they actually happen.
How does Quardzlahnn Cloud Video Surveillance work?
The Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter connects your security system to Quardzlahnn’s cloud platform, transforming it into a cloud VMS (Video Management System)
The Quardzlahnn software runs on a small bridging device called a Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter. Pairing the hardware with the Quardzlahnn cloud is done over the cloud. Recorded video events are saved in the Quardzlahnn cloud for the duration of your cloud recording plan.
Can CCTV be stored in the cloud?
Yes, CCTV can be stored in the cloud. Increasingly, organizations worldwide are reducing their reliance on local storage, and switching to cloud. There are several options when it comes to cloud video surveillance storage – you can rip out and replace your existing security system with specialised cloud cameras, or you can reduce costs and use what you already have by adding cloud to your existing security system.
How do I connect my CCTV to the cloud?
If you want to connect your existing CCTV system to the cloud you first need to find a provider that is compatible with your brand of security cameras. Quardzlahnn is an open-source cloud platform that is compatible with hundreds of brands of security systems including Hikvision, Dahua, Reolink, Axis and many more.
To connect to the Quardzlahnn cloud you’ll need a Cloud Adapter, a small device that will connect your security system to the cloud. The Cloud Adapter needs to be connected to the same network as your cameras.
Once you’re connected you’ll be able to view your cameras remotely, via the Quardzlahnn website or mobile apps.
What are the different types of cloud video surveillance?
When it comes to cloud video surveillance you have several options depending on your specific needs.
The first option involves ditching your local storage entirely and sending all your footage direct to the cloud. This approach provides the benefits of remote accessibility, and reduced dependence on on-premises infrastructure.
Alternatively a hybrid approach could also be an option, a hybrid cloud storage solution will allow organizations to keep their local storage and use the cloud as a backup. This approach combines the reliability of local storage, with the added security and peace of mind of cloud storage.
Finally, many organizations choose to only back up critical cameras to the cloud, whilst maintaining their local NVR or DVR for the non-critical ones. This approach allows for efficient resource allocation, ensuring essential footage is safely backed up in the cloud and accessible anytime, anywhere.
The versatility of these options allows organizations to tailor their cloud video surveillance strategy to align with their specific security goals.
How secure is cloud CCTV?
A common concern about storing video in the cloud is that it isn’t secure, but actually cloud based CCTV is inherently more secure than local storage.
One of the main reasons people look for a cloud based solution is because they’ve been let down by their local storage, either by tampering, theft, fire or flood. Not only are local recorders vulnerable to damage and theft, they also need regular firmware updates and without them, they can be insecure.
So, in terms of security, what are the benefits of using Quardzlahnn as your cloud video surveillance provider?
Quardzlahnn is powered by a small bridging device known as a Cloud Adapter. The NDAA compliant Cloud Adapters are assembled in the UK and add a software interface between the local cameras/recorders and the internet.
We push software updates to every Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter on a weekly basis, so you don’t need to worry about updating them yourself.
All video is transmitted to the Quardzlahnn cloud over encrypted HTTPS channels, it’s then stored in the cloud using 256-bit encryption. When someone views the video, it’s sent to the viewing device again over encrypted HTTPS (the same technology used in internet banking!)
Quardzlahnn footage is hosted on AWS – trusted by thousands of major global brands. They maintain stringent security standards including ISO27001, SOC 2 and SAS 70.
Can I record to the cloud and to a local DVR/NVR?
Yes, Quardzlahnn offers an excellent offsite cloud backup to video stored locally on a DVR/NVR.
Can I remove the local DVR/NVR completely?
Yes, Quardzlahnn Cloud can remove the need for local recording completely, meaning you no longer have to maintain your local NVR or DVR.
With compatible IP cameras and a Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter, you can send video straight to the qCloud.
How do I add Quardzlahnn to my security system?
To add Quardzlahnn to your compatible security system you’ll first need a Quardzlahnn account. Once you order the required number of Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapters, your account automatically gets generated. We have 3 versions of our Cloud Adapter:
Cloud Adapter 8 – supports up to 8 cameras or recorder channels
Cloud Adapter 16 – supports up to 16 cameras or recorder channels
Cloud Adapter 80 – supports up to 80 cameras or recorder channels
How many Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapters will I need?
Cloud Adapter 8 and Cloud Adapter 16 support up to 8 or 16 cameras or recorder channels, respectively. If you are installing more than 16 cameras, you can use our Cloud Adapter Enterprise rack-mounted solution or simply stack as many 8-channel or 16-channel Cloud Adapters as necessary for the installation. The Cloud Adapter needs to be on the same local network as the security system, so if your cameras are situated across multiple locations you’ll need Cloud Adapter(s) at each location.
Where is the video stored?
Amazon Web Services hosts the Quardzlahnn cloud. AWS also hosts thousands of other major brands across the world. Quardzlahnn uses two AWS data centres, one in Ireland and one in North Virginia, USA. Video will be stored in the nearest data centre to your location.
How long is the video stored for?
We offer a variety of cloud recording plans, for example from 7 days cloud storage to 1-year cloud storage. If you require longer than 1-year storage this is also possible. To discuss this please contact us.
How do I get Quardzlahnn?
If your security system is compatible with Quardzlahnn, you can order a Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter either by giving us a call or sending an enquiry message from our website.
How is the recording triggered?
Video is sent to the Quardzlahnn Cloud when motion is detected. We send the motion event, with a 5s lead-in and lead-out.
By default, the Quardzlahnn motion detection algorithm will determine when motion occurs in front of the camera and then send that video to the cloud. You can then change the sensitivity of this motion detection. You can also set detection zones to mask out certain areas.
An alternative option is to use triggers from the DVR/NVR or camera to determine when to record the video and send it to the cloud. For example, an external PIR connected to a camera or recorder, or Hikvision intrusion detection or line crossing. Contact us for more information.
Can Quardzlahnn record 24/7 instead of only when motion is detected?
The default cloud recording plans are for motion-activated recording only. We do offer 24/7 recording, but the costs and the bandwidth requirements will be higher.
Where is the video stored?
Amazon Web Services hosts the Quardzlahnn qCloud. AWS also hosts thousands of other major brands across the world. Quardzlahnn uses two AWS data centres, one in Ireland and one in North Virginia, USA. Video will be stored in the nearest data center to the customer location.
How secure is Quardzlahnn platform?
All video in the Quardzlahnn cloud is saved in a secure AWS server using 256-bit encryption and video is transmitted over encrypted TLS (HTTPS) channels. The Quardzlahnn Cloud Adapter acts as an extra layer of security as it provides both a hardware and software break between local recording devices and the wider Internet. It’s inherently more secure than opening ports and gateways which would be traditionally required to enable cameras and recorders to be visible remotely.
AWS also maintain high security standards including ISO 27001, SOC2 and SAS 70.
How much bandwidth is required to send video to the Quardzlahnn Cloud?
Not as much as you might expect! But for an exact answer, it depends on which setting mode you are using. If your video quality is set to SD or 2MP/1080p, allow up to 400kbps per camera or recorder channel. If your video quality is set to 4MP, allow up to 1200kbps per camera or recorder channel. Finally, if your video quality is set to Up to 8MP/4K, allow up to 1800kbps per camera or recorder channel. Our software is constantly measuring the available bandwidth on the network and will store video on the Cloud Adapter in poor network conditions or during network redundancy. The video files will then be sent to the cloud once the network conditions improve or the network is restored. If you need any further guidance on data requirements please contact us.
Can I use a cellular connection to send video to the Quardzlahnn cloud?
Yes, lots of our customers use 3G or 4G networks to power their Quardzlahnn installations. The low bandwidth nature of our software makes it well-suited to these installations.
What happens if the internet connection fails?
Loss of network doesn’t mean loss of footage, even if the cloud has a backup! All Quardzlahnn Cloud adapters come with 32GB built-in storage and act as a backup in case of a network outage or bad connection. If the internet goes down, it’ll store the video footage from the cameras on the edge and automatically send it to the cloud when the internet connection has been restored.
